According to Visa’s 2013 international barometer of women’s financial literacy, South African women were ranked among the least financial literate in the world. The South African women were ranked number 23 out of 27 nations sampled, suggesting very low access to financial information and skills. The extend to which this impacts the levels of awareness on financial services and ways to create a financially sustainable environment for women.
Barriers hindering women’s financial empowerment are still prevalent, despite actions from us as banking industry, other financial industries, regulators, policy makers and other stakeholders. August is thus an important month for our industry, not only because we are celebrating the great women’s march of 1956 but also as OECD (2012:1 ) argues, women’s economic empowerment is needed for the sustainable development of society. We have women’s mindshare this month, let’s use to inform, educate and engage.
This webinar intends to thoroughly unpack financial inclusion as a tool for women’s financial empowerment. How we as South Africans, as a banking industry are continuing to contribute to the empowerment of women, for the growth and development of our economy.
