His career, marked by significant milestones, reflects not only his exceptional skills as a leader but also his unshakable love for the country. In 1994, as the youngest minister in President Nelson Mandela’s Cabinet, Mr. Mboweni took on the role of Labour Minister during a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. His brilliance in navigating the complex post-apartheid landscape helped shape policies that advanced workers’ rights and laid the groundwork for a more inclusive economy. He use of his intellect and foresight during those challenging early years of democracy remain a testament to his commitment to the prosperity of all South Africans.

After his role in government, Mr. Mboweni continued to shine as the first Black Governor of the South African Reserve Bank. His leadership during this time was characterized by his ability to grasp complex financial systems and apply his considerable knowledge to ensure the stability of South Africa’s economy. His intellect was not only rooted in theory but also in an astute understanding of the unique dynamics facing South Africa and the global economy. Mr. Mboweni’s impact on the banking sector was immense—guiding the sector through critical reforms, ensuring transparency, and maintaining investor confidence during turbulent times.

Later, as Minister of Finance, Mr. Mboweni’s love for his country shone through his steadfast leadership in one of the most difficult periods of our economy. He approached every challenge with a keen intellect, courage, and a deep understanding of the needs of South Africa’s people.

Throughout his career, Mr. Mboweni was admired not only for his extraordinary technical knowledge but also for his open and candid manner. He engaged in public discourse with passion, never shying away from difficult conversations about the future of South Africa. His unique combination of brilliance, humility, and fierce dedication earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and the people of South Africa.

As we mourn the passing of this great South African, we remember not only his professional achievements but also his love for his country and her people. Tito Mboweni’s intellectual legacy and his contributions to the financial and banking sectors will continue to shape South Africa for generations to come.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched during this difficult time.

May his soul rest in peace.
