Be Cyber Safe – Tips to Protect Your Data & Devices From Cybercriminals

Mobile Devices & Tablets

  • Enable a secure lock screen (pattern, password, fingerprint, or face ID).
  • Avoid storing personal or confidential information (e.g., banking details) on your device.
  • Think before downloading apps — avoid unknown or suspicious apps.
  • Do not root or jailbreak your device — this removes built-in security protections.
  • Only download apps from trusted sources like official app stores.
  • Review app permissions before granting access.
  • Install mobile security and antivirus software from a reputable vendor.
  • Disable Bluetooth/Sharing when not in use.
  • Enable settings to remotely locate, lock, or factory reset your device if lost.
  • Keep your device and antivirus up to date with the latest security patches.
  • Encrypt your device data where possible for added protection.

Connectivity & Online Safety

  • Turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, and other wireless connections when not needed.
  • Disable push notifications if they are not necessary.
  • Always sign out of online banking and close your browser when done; power off the device if shared.
  • Clear your browser cache regularly.
  • Avoid logging into a computer with administrator rights unless required (Principle of Least Privilege).
  • Secure your home Wi-Fi with a strong password and proper security settings.
  • Avoid outdated security modes like WEP — use WPA2 or WPA3.
Do not perform banking or sensitive tasks on public Wi-Fi.
  • Never send passwords or login credentials over unsecured networks.
  • Change the default router/admin password to a strong, unique password.

Behaviour & Awareness

  • Use strong, unique passwords for every account.
  • Change passwords regularly and never share them.
  • Avoid using personal identifiable information (PII) such as your name, ID number, or birthdate in passwords or PINs.
  • Be cautious with email attachments or free software from unknown sources.
  • Limit the personal information you share on social media.
  • Set your social media privacy settings to the highest possible level.
